New processing times

We recently lodged our first application under the recently introduced new rules. The immigration forms were sent to Sydney, Nova Scotia in Eastern Canada on 31 January 2009 and the application was approved on 11 February 2009. The full application now goes off to the applicant’s country of residence with the CIC approval letter. We are expecting a very fast visa completion for permanent residency.

HOW DOES ECONOMIC DOWNTURN AFFECT IMMIGRATION ACTIVITY?

The worldwide current economic downturn is like most industry sectors, already disturbing the majority of immigration programmes. However, some programmes are continuing to maintain their level of activity. Sponsorship, particularly of parents is continuing to attract a lot of interest. Bringing parents to Canada, often enables a couple with children to both go out to work, whilst the grandparents remain at home caring for the children. Financially, whilst economic downturns continue persist, then two people working is better than one.

Immigration Minister’s visit to highlight strength of Canada‑India relationship; address issues raised by Indo‑Canadian community

Ottawa, January 7, 2009 — Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney will meet several Ministers in the Indian government, community and business leaders, as well as immigration staff in Canada’s New Delhi and Chandigarh visa offices during a visit to India next week.

“Our government has taken unprecedented steps to strengthen the Canada-India relationship,” said Minister Kenney. “Canada benefits enormously from our friendship with the world’s largest democracy. Canada’s historic ties with India, especially through the Commonwealth, reflect our shared values.”

“The Indo-Canadian community has raised a number of important issues with me, including the need to take action against fraudulent immigration consultants, improve visa processing times, encourage immigration from Indian students to Canada, and build stronger connections between Indian and Canadian businesses,” said Minister Kenney. “I intend to work on fulfilling our government’s promise to modernize the immigration system to make it more efficient and responsive to labour market needs, as well as fairer for applicants.”

Immigration Minister visits Pakistan

Islamabad, January 10, 2009 — Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney held official bilateral meetings with the Pakistani Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, Advisor to the Prime Minister (Interior Affairs), Information Minister, Minister for Labour and Manpower, Minister of Minorities, and other government officials during a two-day visit to Pakistan. Minister Kenney also met with Canadian visa officers at the High Commission in Islamabad and important Pakistani political figures, as well as religious leaders from different communities.
