Independent Category - Skilled Worker
INTRODUCTION
The category of Skilled Worker is the one most commonly used by applicants from all over the world, and accounts for over 70% of all Canadian immigrants. To qualify under the new rules that came into effect on 28th June 2002, applicants must obtain immigration points from the listed set of criteria shown below. To give you some idea of the level of qualifying difficulty, under the old regulations that were in force until June 2002, applicants were required to reach a score of 62.5% to qualify. However, under the new regulations where greater emphasis is placed on language skills and work experience, applicants must achieve a minimum score of 67% in order to reach the qualifying level. The 4.5% increased score requirement over the old regulations has marginally increased the level of qualifying difficulty. Out of a total score of 100, points are awarded from each of the following factors:
- Education up to 25 points available
- Work experience up to 21 points available
- Language up to 24 points available *
- HRDC Validated, Arranged Employment authorisation 10 points available
- Age factor for people aged between 21 & 49 years 10 points available
- Adaptability covering varying criteria up to 10 points available
* It is strongly recommended that you take an official language test if you are claiming skills in a language that is not your native tongue. (IELTS English) or (TEF French) language tests are usually preferred. IELTS test score of 7+ in each category will provide an overall fluency grading and a score of 5 will provide a moderate grading. TEF test score of 5+ will provide a fluency grading and a score of 4 will provide a moderate grading.
